tree transformation

Tree Alteration / at Apple

This tree was removed from a suburban front lawn in West Milford, New Jersey and transported whole to the gallery where it  was placed upon the gallery floor in a horizontal position.

On the second day the tree was cut into three-foot sections and left in their original configuration.

The next day the root ball was suspended by a block and tackle from the ceiling. Thereafter every day was spent during gallery hours with a full complement of power tools, paints, materials etc. transforming each section into individual art objects.

This work continued for the entire show. At the conclusion of the show most of the materials and transformations were disposed of except for a few which were kept as artifacts.

The selected slides are:

  1. the suspended root-ball

  2. Two bundled cut pieces from one section

  3. bread sliced piece from another section

  4. beaded tree segment (artifact)

  5. bundled piece mounted on a shelf unit as a finished sculptural work (artifact)

Approximately sixty more slides exist documenting the entire show
